Market tendency is to make leather more supple, with an uniform fine grain, which allows a soft finishing for luxurious leather. The use of XIRAN SMA resins as a retanning agent can improve and contribute to obtain final requirements, which include hand, softness and mechanical properties. XIRAN SMA grades and especially the low molecular weight copolymers are best suited in this application. The resins used for the retanning are aqueous solutions of the sodium salts of the SMA resins.
